A tricky act to balance

Article Abstract:

UK mental health nurses are finding it more difficult to combine the role of health care provider with the legal framework which surrounds caring for mentally ill patients. Public fears about mentally ill people have grown while the number of care facilities has steadily fallen, leading to the call for people to be either forcibly treated or placed into secure units. Nurses have to weigh the rights of the patient with the need for treatment. Mental health patients are concerned about violation of their rights.

Making a point of contact

Article Abstract:

The Research and Development for Psychiatry (RDP) Case Management Project was established in 1989 to counter insufficient mental health provision in community care. Multi-disciplinary teams on four sites took referrals of patients with long-term mental illness. Since its inception 355 referrals have been made of whom 195 became clients. About 118 referrals were considered unsuitable, were untraceable, had died or refused the service. The project has revealed the need for a flexible and accessible service.

Serious mental health problems: policy changes

Article Abstract:

The move towards allowing people with mental health problems to live in the community means that all nurses, specialists or otherwise, are likely to meet and treat mentally-ill people on a regular basis. Nurses will have to play an important role in meeting the needs of mentally-ill people, who often live in poverty and isolation. The basic principles of working with people with serious mental health problems are explained and the current policy in mental health provision is discussed.
