AMA president seeks unity, increased emphasis on ethics

Article Abstract:

Lonnie R. Bristow will become the first African-American to preside over the American Medical Assn (AMA) in June, 1995. He is also the first to achieve that position by first entering the association from a specialty society. He has been president of the American Society of Internal Medicine, and has been a member of the AMA House of Delegates since 1978. He plans to increase unity in the medical profession, add more emphasis on ethics, and increase communication between the public and the association.

Professional autonomy: incoming AMA president wants to listen to the voices of individual physicians

Article Abstract:

Members of the American Medical Assn (AMA) have chosen as their new president a general practitioner, John Lee Clowe, who espouses old-fashioned medical traditions, including autonomy in making decisions concerning patient care. He supports strong peer review, self-regulation and high standards of physician practice. Clowe also takes special interest in planning Health Access America, the AMA's recommendation for health care reform in the United States.
