Abdominal massage

Article Abstract:

Abdominal massage may be useful for relief of constipation in disabled clients. A case study of a client with cerebral palsy and epilepsy demonstrated its advantages. Massage encouraged peristalsis and stimulated muscle movement. Bowel movement generally occurred spontaneously some time after. During one month of treatment enemas were unnecessary. Massage may easily be incorporated into physiotherapy programmed and provides socialisation opportunities. Clients' self-esteem may also increase with more effective bowel management.

Hands on help: Abdominal massage is a viable alternative to laxatives and enemas in chronic constipation

Article Abstract:

Therapeutic massage has been effectively used in the healing environment throughout the ages. Abdominal massage is used as a therapy to relieve constipation, and some spinal units recommend self-massage with a tennis ball, with the aim of releasing spasm in the abdomen and allow normal gut activity. Findings from 10 patients with varying constipation or disability problems showed a trend towards increased bowel movements and a reduction or even discontinuation of medication using abdominal massage.
