Abortion law matures

Article Abstract:

There are still very mixed views about abortion in the UK, even though the country's abortion laws are among the most liberal in the world. Anti-abortion campaigners believe that British women can in practice obtain abortion on request, but legally this is not actually the case. Between 85% and 90% of abortions are undertaken at before 13 weeks' gestation, although abortion is legal in most cases up to 24 weeks' gestation under the 1990 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act. Pro-abortion campaigners are calling for genuine abortion on request.

Theatre of operations

Article Abstract:

The UK National Association of Theatre Nurses is considering new roles, structures and opportunities for peri-operative nurses, but, at the same time, there is a shortage of theatre nurses. The increasing scope of theatre nursing may be intimidating to some. However, the Directorate Manager of Theatres at Papworth Hospital NHS Trust believes other reasons for the shortfall are an absence of theatre experience for Project 2000 students, and a misguided perception that theatre staff need to be highly experienced nurses.

The Irish Nurses' (INO) Organisation will ask its 15,000 members to vote on strike action to protest against Eire's health services management. The INO wants a 21% rise in staff nurses' maximum pay to 21,164 Irish pounds by 1999. However, the management is offering a 10.7% rise over two years. Strike action could commence in February 1996.
