Advances in genetic screening raise treatment, ethical questions

Article Abstract:

Activists want a federal law to prohibit insurance companies and employers from discriminating on the basis of genetic tests. Some states have such laws, but many are too specific to protect privacy rights in all cases. The Council for Responsible Genetics and other groups argue that patients are afraid of genetic tests which may assist in preventing health problems from developing. The Senate Labor and Human Resources Commission held a hearing to determine if there is a need for a federal law.

Nurse groups question poll that finds many assist suicides

Article Abstract:

The American Nurses Association and American Association of Critical Care Nurses are concerned that a study on assisted suicides could damage the reputation of the nursing profession. The survey in question was conducted by David A. Asch, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania. Asch's survey found that one in five critical-care nurses has intentionally hastened a patient's life. The nurse groups believe that the survey was scientifically flawed.
