Access to health

Article Abstract:

Homelessness has been associated with mental health problems, respiratory diseases and malnutrition. However, lack of housing may prevent adequate health care. Initiatives based in London, England, aim to improve access to services. The government's Special Mental Health Initiative in London, England provides a welcoming flexible service to homeless people. A Thames regional health authorities and King's Fund project, Access to Health, is also directed at the homeless. The Bloomsbury and Islington COMPASS project is a mainstream service that has attracted homeless people through a flexible and casual service.

Homeless and healthless

Article Abstract:

Insufficient care is being given to homeless people living in hostels, and local health authorities need to be more involved. Almost 400 homeless single men reside in Arlington House, the biggest such hostel in London, where thirty use drugs and no less than seventy have mental illness and over 25% are alcohol-dependent. Health authority funding is called for to construct new homes for older residents, and the hostel should be adapted to meet the needs of those residents with a disability. There are many such hostels whose circumstances are similar.
