Acute diverticulitis

Article Abstract:

Acute diverticulitis is a serious, inflammatory complication of intestinal diverticula. Diverticula are pouches in the intestines, often the colon, which can collect undigested food or fecal material. In diverticulitis, the pouch becomes inflamed and can perforate the bowel wall, causing peritonitis. Inadequate dietary fiber, which reduces stool volume and increases pressure in the colon, is a common cause of diverticular disease. A liquid diet and antibiotic medication may adequately treat a mild attack of diverticulitis, but more severe disease can require surgical correction.

Thrombolysis for acute arterial occlusion of the legs

Article Abstract:

It may be premature to recommend thrombolytic drugs for arterial occlusions of the legs. This condition occurs when blood clots block the flow of blood in the arteries in the legs. These clots can be broken down by thrombolytic drugs. A 1998 study found that patients with arterial occlusions of the legs who were given thrombolytic drugs were less likely to need surgery. However, these patients were more likely to develop severe bleeding complications from the treatment. Another study showed that thrombolytic therapy was more expensive than surgery in these patients.
