Ethics of fertility treatment

Article Abstract:

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) monitors issues surrounding fertility treatment and regulates bodies involved in fertility work in the UK. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 created the statutory body and empowered it to regulate treatment and research, to involve itself in debate on the ethical issues and to provide information to the public. The HFEA has prevented three clinics from continuing their work, granted 26 research licences and continually reviews the code of practice to which clinics should refer when considering the offer of treatment.

Determining the causes of fertility problems

Article Abstract:

Couples who consult a doctor due to problems with conception will undergo a range of medical examinations to establish the cause of the problem. Medical personnel should be aware of the emotional stress this may create for the couple. The doctor will take a medical history, the couple will identify the fertile days in the woman's menstrual cycle and they will, if appropriate, have blood tests and sperm analysis. Doctors frequently prescribe clomiphene citrate to treat ovulation problems and the couple may have further tests, including an ultrasound scan or a laparoscopy.

Rhinitis: diagnosis and treatment

Article Abstract:

Debilitating inflammation of the nasal passage and a discharge of mucosa is usually caused by an irritant, such as pollen, pet hair or pollutants. The nasal disorder is known as rhinitis, which affects up to 23% of the population in the UK. The best way to reduce rhinitis is to avoid contact with the irritant, although this is difficult in the case of work related particles or allergen such as pollen. Severely affected patients may be treated with immunotherapy which acts to desensitize the patient to known allergens.
