Acute renal failure in the first trimester resulting from uterine leiomyomas

Article Abstract:

Pressure from large uterine fibroid tumors may result in kidney failure during pregnancy. A woman with a history of uterine fibroid tumors went into kidney failure during her first pregnancy. A 24.4 pound fibroid tumor pressing on the kidney and liver was removed after delivery. Drainage tubes surgically placed into the kidney during the pregnancy had resulted in improved kidney function. However, her infant was delivered by cesarean after further pregnancy complications. The infant died eight days after delivery.

Article Abstract:

Doctors report the case of a 16-year-old pregnant girl who developed kidney failure during the third trimester caused by obstruction of her ureters. The ureters carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. During pregnancy, the uterus can obstruct the ureters. Her kidney function returned to normal after the child was born following induced labor.
