Adaptation of a food frequency questionnaire to assess diets of Puerto Rican and non-Hispanic adults

Article Abstract:

A version of the National Cancer Inst. (NCI)/Block food frequency questionnaire has been modified to study diet and health in Hispanic adults of the northeastern US. Puerto Rican and non-Hispanic adults were questioned. To decide what items to add to the food list, foods that contributed to nutrient intake of Puerto Rican adults in the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HHANES) were ranked. Portion sizes were considered. Use in minority populations of food frequency questionnaires developed for the general population appears to give biased estimates of intake unless modifications are made.

Standardized lifetime risk

Article Abstract:

Two new methods for standardizing the lifetime risk and the number of years of life lost are proposed. The new measure and examples are shown to compare rates over time and for comparing the impact of various diseases in public health. The rates are simple to calculate and are beneficial to epidemiologists and the general public.
