Adaption to adversity

Article Abstract:

A study of 10 children with sickle cell disease (SCD), undertaken by Kenny Midence, Sally Davies and Peter Fuggle, looks at the psychosocial impact of the symptoms on their relationships and activities. Results show that the unpredictable pain crises most affect school attendance, which may have an impact on school performance, while pain crises and hospitalisation were the worst things they experienced. However, all the children said that relationships with their parents were not affected by SCD and that they were not treated differently from their brothers and sisters.
