Adding insult to injury: families hurt by domestic violence take second hit when insurers deny them coverage

Article Abstract:

Insurance companies are denying accident, health and life insurance to women who have been victims of domestic violence. A survey conducted by the state insurance commissioner of Pennsylvania has revealed that 28% of Pennsylvania insurance firms consider domestic violence as a criteria for issuing insurance policies. Many victims with a history of abuse have been denied coverage because, insurance officials argue, they are similar to diabetics who do not take their insulin.

Home HIV tests raise issues of counseling, prevention

Article Abstract:

Three manufacturers have submitted applications to the FDA for approval of home medical kits that test for HIV infection. Such test kits are designed for people who would prefer the privacy of at-home testing; blood samples collected by the kits would be sent to laboratories for testing. South Carolina's Dept of Health and Environmental Control opposes such kits, since users do not receive counseling and their names would not be reported for tracking purposes.

Being there

Article Abstract:

Emergency room operations within such places as the Parkland Health and Hospital System are allowing family members into the emergency rooms when a patient is being resuscitated. Foote Hospital, in Jackson, MI, is also doing the same. The goal is to give families more control in an emergency situation that involves someone near death and to honor the wishes of family members who may, in fact, benefit the situation.
