Adjustment of birth weight standards for maternal and infant characteristics improves the prediction of outcome in the small-for-gestational-age infant

Article Abstract:

Other factors than length of pregnancy may determine a mother's risk for delivering a small for gestational age (SGA) infant. Researchers developed a formula for determining the likelihood of complications with an SGA infant based on the mothers' weight gain, height, race, age, prepregnancy weight, and number of previous births by studying 2,947 normal pregnancies. This formula was then tested on 10,718 subsequent pregnancies. The formula more accurately and more frequently predicted complications with SGA infants than the tables based on pregnancy length currently in use.

Social differences of very preterm birth in Europe: interaction and obstetric history

Article Abstract:

Social differences of very pre-term births, between 22-32 completed weeks, showed a significant relation to women with low educational levels and no obstetric history of first-trimester abortion or previous adverse pregnancy outcome. Unemployment of household members of this group also showed a double risk of very pre-term births.

Are risk factors the same for small for gestational age versus other preterm births?

Article Abstract:

High blood pressure during pregnancy, older maternal age, smoking during pregnancy, and extreme thinness or obesity are risk factors for fetal growth restriction. These risk factors were less important causes of other premature births.
