Adrenocortical Tumors: Recent Advances in Basic Concepts and Clinical Management

Article Abstract:

Adrenocortical tumors are common tumors in humans but they are usually benign. These tumors occur on the outer part of the adrenal glands in the area called the cortex. A small percentage can cause endocrine disease characterized by excessive blood levels of hormones. Research has identified some of the mechanisms involved in the formation of the tumor. Genetic and chromosome abnormalities have also been linked to adrenocortical tumors. Improved imaging techniques can distinguish between benign and malignant tumors and laparoscopic removal of the adrenal gland shortens hospital stays and leads to faster recovery.

Aberrant interleukin-1 receptors in a cortisol-secreting adrenal adenoma causing Cushing's syndrome

Article Abstract:

The case of a 62-year-old woman with an unusual adrenal tumor is presented. She had symptoms of Cushing's disease and a CT scan revealed a mass on her right adrenal gland. Her symptoms resolved when the mass was surgically removed. Analysis of tissue samples from the mass revealed infiltration by immune cells that produce interleukin-1. The tumor contained receptors for interleukin-1 and the tumor produced cortisol when stimulated by interleukin-1 but not when stimulated by corticotropin.

Adrenomedullary dysplasia and hypofunction in patients with classic 21-hydroxylase deficiency

Article Abstract:

Patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia have anatomic and physiological abnormalities in their adrenal glands. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is an overproduction of male sex hormones by the adrenal glands that is often caused by an enzyme deficiency.
