Evaluating student performance

Article Abstract:

Nurse clinicians who act as mentors to student nurses on clinical placements often find student evaluation the most difficult part of the task. Evaluation is the process of assessing student performance against agreed desired outcomes. Evaluation is not something which occurs only at the end of the placement. It includes continuous observation, monitoring and feedback, and mentors should help students reflect on their own performance. Criticism should be constructive but honest, and the mentor should always try to be specific. A recognized framework for reflection will be helpful.

2. Building relationships

Article Abstract:

Those who are to act as mentors to student nurses should take care to prepare in advance for this important role. They should prepare a welcome letter, consider what learning opportunities are available to the students in the clinical environment and ensure that they make time to get to know the students. Students should be welcomed with enthusiasm and interest, and mutual expectations should be clarified. The mentor must create an environment in which the students feel free to ask questions.

Developing competence

Article Abstract:

Mentors can help students develop competence in clinical skills by helping to organize work, offering feedback and support, provide a positive role model and identify learning resources. Medical trainees should be encouraged to become responsible for patient care, handle their own paper work and learning materials. Decision-making is an essential skill which should be fully developed by the mentor.
