Independence day

Article Abstract:

The health authority in Coventry, England, has developed a scheme for the care of infirm, elderly patients which offers an innovative care option and relieves the pressure for acute hospital beds. The authority discharges up to 10 patients at a time to an intermediate care unit which comprises private flats to promote independent living, yet is under the 24-hour supervision of nurses. Patients have a designated nurse and support worker, a full assessment and care plan, and opportunities for physiotherapy and other forms of therapy as appropriate.

Learning disabilities in later life

Article Abstract:

Nursing staff need to ensure they have relevant skills to offer both traditional and holistic nursing to elderly people with learning difficulties. Older people are living longer due to better medical care, leading to an increase in the number of older people with learning difficulties, who have very specific needs from medical staff. Early use of diagnostic tools will help assess the level of learning disability in elderly people, which may occur through illness or mental problems.
