Article Abstract:

Physician groups that have high revenues and high salaries tend to have larger support staffs than other group practices, according to a 1996 Medical Group Management Association survey of 353 multispecialty groups. The 13 medical practices with the top financial performance had an average of 5.37 full-time-equivalent, non-physician employees per doctor, compared to 4.63 employees per doctor in other practices. The bigger support staffs may be beneficial because they handle paperwork and free up doctors' time.
