Alternative approach

Article Abstract:

Shadow health minister Dawn Primarolo, herself a user of complementary therapies, believes that such therapies should be available on the National Health Service (NHS). She argues that public demand for referrals to complementary therapists such as homeopaths, acupuncturists and chiropractors is growing but that access to treatment is limited by cost. The Labor Party is calling on the government to establish regulatory bodies for alternative therapists and wants the law to be changed to protect patients. Primarolo also wants nurses to be trained in the use of complementary therapies.

Prescription for eviction?

Article Abstract:

Practice nurses in the United Kingdom fear redundancies following changes in how physicians are paid with new bandings for health promotion, though physicians claim that they are seeking new ways of using their nursing staff. Transitional payments for physicians are believed to be too low, which puts nurses jobs at risk, some critics argue. However, others argue that physicians may be fearful of claims of unfair dismissal if they sack nurses, and there is uncertainty as to what will happen once physicians note their budgetary constraints.

A disaffected profession. (how nurses cope with the move to community care

Article Abstract:

A survey on the move towards community care found that all nurses were unhappy about the levels of support received and nearly half had experienced a change in job status. Several nurses favoured redundancy instead of moving to a community post and most were concerned about their future in nursing. It was found that many managers supported training but could not provide funding for courses or time off to attend.
