Alternative intake

Article Abstract:

Medical staff increasingly recognize peripheral parenteral nutrition (PPN) as a viable alternative to central parenteral nutrition. There are some contraindications for PPN, including hypercatabolism and the presence of high fluid output fistulae, but there are a number of advantages. Insertion of the catheter, and associated nursing care, are simpler and cheaper, and there is a reduced risk of catheter-related sepsis. Procedures for PPN and catheter care are described, and recommendations for best practice are presented.

PICC of the bunch

Article Abstract:

Health care professional need sufficient knowledge and experience to safely and effectively deliver parenteral nutrition (PN). Due to problems experienced with midlines, a suitable alternative administration route for PN was sought. The peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) was introduced, avoiding risks linked with a central venous cannula, and providing a dedicated venous access. It does not require anaesthetic and surgical involvement.
