High ideals

Article Abstract:

The UKCC is planning a pilot scheme to discover the best way of assessing nurses who are working at a higher level, such as nurse practitioners and specialist practice nurses. They will be assessed by a panel of four assessors one of whom will also be a nurse. Those taking part in the pilot assessment will be assessed in their place of work and they will be asked to provide evidence of their work. They will be expected to show their work encompasses seven different criteria, such as training other nurses, research and giving good quality of care to patients.

Italian ideals: Italy pioneered care in the community for people with mental health problems. What can UK nurses learn from their Italian colleagues?

Article Abstract:

The Italian psychiatric reforms refocused services to a community setting, but there is a lack of published material on the impact, making it difficult for British nurses to learn from the experiences of their Italian colleagues. The differences and similarities with Italian colleagues are reflected on by the author, who visited the country as a prelude to arranging student exhcanges.

Paternalistic intervention in mental health care

Article Abstract:

People with impaired capacity need to cared for in a paternalistic way to avoid risks, although nurses must be able to weight up the element of risk involved before deciding to intervene in decision making. Institutionalization may by the best option for some people with impaired capacity, however a strategic nursing regime will help many to avoid this fate.
