An oxytocin receptor antagonist (atosiban) in the treatment of preterm labor: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with tocolytic rescue

Article Abstract:

The drug atosiban can delay premature labor for up to seven days, according to a study of 501 pregnant women in premature labor. This drug inhibits oxytocin, a hormone that make the uterus contract. The drug is sold under the trade name Antocin.

Maintenance treatment of preterm labor with the oxytocin antagonist atosiban

Article Abstract:

The drug atosiban may prevent premature birth if given as a continuous intravenous infusion to pregnant women who have had one episode of premature labor. This was the conclusion of a study of 513 pregnant women who received atosiban to stop premature labor and continued to receive the drug or a placebo until the end of the pregnancy.

The pharmacokinetics of the oxytocin antagonist atosiban in pregnant women with preterm uterine contractions

Article Abstract:

Intravenous infusions of the drug atosiban may be useful in decreasing uterine contractions in pregnant women experiencing premature labor. Researchers studied the effect of atosiban on eight women experiencing premature labor contractions between 20 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. Blood samples revealed that the maximum concentration of atosiban occurred one hour after infusions began. Uterine contractions diminished by 65% in the second hour after infusion. Atosiban was quickly cleared from the blood after the infusions ended, as its half-life was about 18 minutes.
