Analysis: Is the price of self-regulation too high?

Article Abstract:

About 14,000 nurses oppose the decision of the NMC to increase the professional registration fees from 60 pounds to 144 pounds with reference to their self-regulation that helps establishing own standards for clinical practice and own rules to govern people. However, the NMC argues that if the nurses want to be self-regulated they have to cooperate with the decision, as the fee rise is necessary for its functioning and for meeting the commitments both to the nurses and the public as a regulator.

Should excess hours be allowed?

Article Abstract:

European Commission ran a consultation in the last week of March 2005 on whether a clause should be removed from the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) which would allow individuals, including UK workers such as nurses, to sign away their right to work a maximum of 48 hours a week. It was seen that people working for long hours tend to be less efficient and is also unhealthy.
