Androgen sulfate and glucuronide conjugates in nonhirsute and hirsute women with polycystic ovarian syndrome

Article Abstract:

The androgens testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) are hormones which produce male characteristics. Androgens can cause hirsutism in women, a condition characterized by excess hair. In polycystic ovarian syndrome, women become infertile because they are unable to ovulate or menstruate. These female patients may or may not be hirsute. The amount of androgens circulating in the blood may not explain excess hair in hirsute women. Androgen sulfate and glucuronide conjugates may be better indicators of androgen action and preferred markers for hirsutism in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome than testosterone and DHEA. Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome with and without hirsutism were studied. In patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome, androsterone glucuronide was increased by 132 percent in hirsute women and not in nonhirsute women. Androsterone glucuronide is the preferred measurement in assessing hirsutism. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Single- and multiple-dose pharmacokinetics of a low-dose oral contraceptive in women with chronic renal failure undergoing peritoneal dialysis

Article Abstract:

Metabolism of a low-dose oral contraceptive may be different in women on peritoneal dialysis for chronic kidney failure than in healthy women. Five women on dialysis and four healthy women were treated with a single dose of an oral contraceptive that contained 35 micrograms of ethinyl estradiol and one milligram of norethindrone. Five women on dialysis and five healthy women were also treated with a multiple dose of the same oral contraceptive. After treatment with a multiple dose, clearance of ethinyl estradiol from the body was lower in women on dialysis than in the healthy women. Reduced clearance resulted in slightly higher blood levels of the drugs in the women on dialysis. Clearance of norethindrone was the same in both groups of women after a single dose or a multiple dose.

The insulin resistant subphenotype of polycystic ovary syndrome: clinical parameters and pathogenesis

Article Abstract:

A comparison of clinical and biochemical characteristics of the insulin resistant (IR) and non-IR subphenotypes in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is carried out, to typify the clinical features of IR in PCOS. The reports conclude that IR in PCOS is associated with obesity, acanthosis nigricans (AN), hirsutism, resistance to ovulation induction with clomiphene citrate (CC), and lower luteinizing hormone (LH), LH/follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) ratios, and testosterone levels.
