Angiogenesis as a therapeutic target

Article Abstract:

Inhibiting angiogenesis is a promising strategy for treatment of cancer and several other disorders, including age-related macular degeneration. Therapeutic angiogenesis is an exciting frontier of cardiovascular medicine, but further understanding of the mechanism of vascular morphogenesis is needed first.

VEGF couples hypertrophic cartilage remodeling, ossification and angiogenesis during endochondral bone formation

Article Abstract:

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), during endochondral bone formation, has been found to combine hypertrophic remodeling of cartilage, ossification and angiogenesis. VEGF was inactivated in a study via systemic administration of a soluble receptor chimeric protein to 24-day-old mice.

Clinical applications of angiogenic growth factors and their inhibitors

Article Abstract:

Angiogenic growth factors could be used therapeutically to grow new blood vessels in ischemic or infarcted heart muscle. Inhibitors of angiogenic growth factors could be used therapeutically to treat solid tumors, which must grow new blood vessels to survive.
