Another wage-round victory but are we winning the war?

Article Abstract:

Nurses in the UK received an unstaged pay award significantly above the rate of inflation in both 1999 and 2000. The average wage for a staff nurse is now approaching 20,000 pounds sterling a year. However, nurses still receive lower salaries than comparable public sector workers, and the Royal College of Nursing estimates that there are around 17,000 full-time registered nursing vacancies. The 2000 pay award makes some progress in addressing the fact that the 1999 review did not reward ward-based nurses for their experience and commitment. However, it is only a short-term solution.

Nurse consultants to get 42,000 pounds sterling

Article Abstract:

The UK government is expected to announce a top pay ceiling of 42,000 pound sterling for the newly created posts of nurse consultant, which is designed to ensure the best nursing staff stay in the profession. Individual nurse consultants will be evaluated on their past experience, training, qualifications and leadership abilities when salary is being decided. Nursing unions claim the salary of 42,000 pounds sterling is still not enough for the experience being offered.

NHS stalwarts starved of recognition

Article Abstract:

Unison, the trade union which represents 160,000 nurses, is backing dissatisfied enrolled nurses (ENs). ENs are unhappy with levels of stress, have concerns about job security and earn low salaries, no more than 13,915 pounds sterling per annum, on grade C. The head of nursing at Unison, Karen Jennings, wants to see all ENs on grade D at least, with no less than 14,400 pounds sterling.
