Antenatal thyrotropin-releasing hormone to prevent lung disease in preterm infants

Article Abstract:

Giving women in premature labor intravenous thyrotropin-releasing hormone does not appear to reduce the risk of lung disease in the newborn infant. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone stimulates the production of thyroid hormones, which can enhance lung development in the fetus. Researchers intravenous thyrotropin-releasing hormone or a placebo to 981 women in premature labor. Of the 1,134 infants born, 769 were considered at risk of lung disease. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone was no more effective than placebo in preventing lung disease or death in these infants.

Inhaled nitric oxide in preterm infants undergoing mechanical ventilation

Article Abstract:

A study is presented to review the use of the controversial nitric oxide therapy in infants at risk for bronchopulmonary dysplasia. It is concluded that inhaled nitric oxide therapy when started between 7 and 21 days of age improves the pulmonary outcome for premature infants who are at risk for bronchopulmonary dysplasia and no apparent short-term adverse effects were recorded.

Multiple courses of antenatal corticosteroids and outcome of premature neonates

Article Abstract:

Multiple doses of corticosteroids are not more beneficial than a single dose and may even be harmful. Corticosteroids are given to women in premature labor to prevent lung disease in the baby. In a study of 710 babies, multiple doses led to increased mortality, decreased fetal growth and suppression of the adrenal glands.
