'Orphans' meet cholesterol

Article Abstract:

The biochemical and genetical aspects of Cholesterol absorption and transport are revisited and a new finding shows that these functions are regulated by 'orphans' or X receptors. Research reveals that retinoids are such hormone receptors of nuclear origin involved in the cholesterol homeostasis.

Apolipoprotein B secretion and atherosclerosis are decreased in mice with phospholipid-transfer protein deficiency

Article Abstract:

Plasma phospholipid-transfer protein (PLTP) has been shown to play a major part in regulating the secretion of ApoB-containing lipoproteins (BLp) and could be a therapeutic target for treating diabetes, obesity, and hyperlipidemia. Dimnished BLp in hepatocytes was corrected when PLTP was reintroduced through an adenovirus.

HDL as a target in the treatment of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease

Article Abstract:

The mechanism that underline the protective effect of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is described. Several strategies that have emerged to increase levels of HDL cholesterol to treat cardiovascular disease including nuclear receptor modulation inhibition of cholesteryl ester transfer protein and infusion of apolipoprotein/phospholipid complexes.
