Prevalence of multiple dideoxynucleoside analogue resistance (MddNR) in a multicenter cohort of HIV-1-infected Italian patients with virologic failure

Article Abstract:

About 3% of all HIV patients in Italy may be infected with a strain of HIV that is resistant to more than one nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. This was the conclusion of a study of 177 HIV patients who did not respond to combination drug therapy.

Increasing prevalence of non-clade B HIV-1 strains in heterosexual men and women, as monitored by analysis of reverse transcriptase and protease sequences

Article Abstract:

The presence of non-clade B HIV strains is increasing in Europe, and women and heterosexuals are at highest risk. Although clade B strains are the predominant strain in Europe, Australis, and the US, this could change, according to Italian researchers.

The calculated genetic barrier for antiretroviral drug resistance substitutions is largely similar for different HIV-1 subtypes

Article Abstract:

The genetic barrier between subtypes are compared using some 2000 HIV-1 sequences (>600 of non-B subtype) isolated from anti-retroviral-naive patients in Europe. Based on the calculated genetic barrier, the rate of drug resistance development may be similar for different HIV-1 subtypes.
