Assessment of 5-aminolevulinic acid-induced porphyrin fluorescence in patients with peritoneal endometriosis

Article Abstract:

Light-induced fluorescence of porphyrins can be used to detect endometriosis after giving women 5-aminolevulinic acid. 5-aminolevulinic acid is a precursor of porphyrins, and when it is given to women with endometriosis, porphyrins accumulate in the abnormal uterine tissue.

Twenty-year history of endometriosis-associated pelvic pain: too much surgery or not enough?

Article Abstract:

Doctors describe the case of a 36-year-old woman who had a 20-year history of pelvic pain and endometriosis which included 11 operations. After the third operation, she developed debilitating pelvic pain and seemed to get less and less benefit from each successive operation. She was found to have adhesions during later operations, which could have been a complication of surgery. Several effective drugs are available for treating endometriosis, which could spare the patient from the complications of multiple operations.
