Plasma adenosine levels increase in women with normal pregnancies

Basal metabolic rate in hyperemesis gravidarum: comparison to normal pregnancy and response to treatment

Article Abstract:

The authors have investigated resting minute ventillation and oxygen consumption in women with hyperemesis gravidarum measured before and after treatment. Results demonstrate that resting oxygen consumption is lower in patients with hyperemesis gravidarum.

Evidence for mechanisms of the acute-phase response to endotoxin in late-gestation fetal goats

Article Abstract:

The production of chemicals that suppress fever may explain why endotoxins do not cause fever in human and animal fetuses. Endotoxins are produced by bacteria during bacterial infections. The endotoxin stimulates the production of prostaglandins in the body, which then produce fever. Researchers measured the concentration of various chemicals produced in response to endotoxins in fetal goats. The goats did not develop fever, and this may be due to the fact that prostaglandin levels did not increase but the levels of arginine vasopressin did increase. Arginine vasopressin is known to suppress fever.
