Apology in medical practice

Article Abstract:

The notion that physicians should make full disclosure of medical errors to patients has gained importance over the years and physicians are encouraged to offer an apology in case of mistakes on their part. An overview of a conceptual framework for analyzing apologies is presented in an attempt to encourage dialogue between medical risk management experts and behavioral scientists, the two groups who often approach apologies from different by complementary perspectives.

Pitfalls of converting practice guidelines into quality measures: lessons learned from a VA performance measure

Article Abstract:

The difficulties measuring the quality of colorectal cancer screening demonstrates that even well-intentioned performance measure can have pitfalls. The case study at the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) facility illustrates the pitfalls that can cause adherence rates to guideline-based performance measures.
