Are extravagant rules and customs costing lives?

Article Abstract:

The US health system operates on the assumption that no step is too expensive if it protects health and safety. However, that point of view prices a large proportion of citizens out of the market for health care. For instance, each hospital bed constitutes a $10,000 investment because of rules of government bodies and accreditation committees. Even nursing homes have grown so costly that few of those who need them can afford them. Also, hospital supplies are paid for by insurance carriers, so there is no incentive to economize.

Insurance savings plan could stem health cost spiral

Article Abstract:

The practice of providing health insurance unconditionally for every medical procedure is the reason why health care costs are so high. The solution to this problem is not to provide more insurance but to provide less. Coverage should be limited to catastrophic medical conditions, not to simple procedures, such as tonsillectomies. At present, the very idea that third parties will relieve patients of the burden of paying medical bills is an incentive for physicians to drive prices up.

Doctors' pay poll is 'stupid,' reflects sick society

Article Abstract:

Analysis of a public opinion survey reveals that many persons believe doctors' earnings are too high. Possibly those polled exhibit envy and ignorance of the tremendous contributions physicians have made, including extending the life span of Americans. Most health problems result from bad habits such as overeating, lack of exercise, smoking, drinking and drug abuse.
