Are placebos in advanced cancer trials ethically justified?

Article Abstract:

A question is raised on whether placebos in advanced cancer trials were ethically justified placebos play a vital role in drug development and is necessary for improved oncology drug development. Placebo controls are warranted when therapies are effective partially or have adverse effects and when treatment of malignancy is rare and randomized controlled trials with an active control would be impossible due to decreasing patients.

Laura van't Veer, PhD: bringing tumor gene profiles into the clinic

Article Abstract:

Laura van't Veer, PhD at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam, recognized a 70-gene profile that could predict cancer recurrence in a subset of women who had node-negative breast cancer. The studies would be on the foundation of upcoming clinical trial that would use DNA microarry technology which provides a snapshot of what genes are active, in normal and cancerous cells to determine therapies for women with this disease.
