Are robots safe work partners?

Article Abstract:

Industrial robots are widely used in industry to perform tasks that are repetitive or are hazardous to humans. About 40% of robots in the US are used in the automobile industry. Despite their obvious advantages, robots can also be dangerous, as shown in the rising incidence of robot-related occupational injuries and deaths in many industrial countries. To address this problem, interlocked barrier guards, light curtains, pressure-sensitive mats, infrared detectors and tactile systems have been developed to reduce robot-related accidents. The US, Japan, Germany, the UK, France, Sweden and Russia have also issued safety standards for industrial robots.
