International AIDS Conference Faces "New Realism" of Advances, Obstacles

Article Abstract:

Researchers attending the 12th World AIDS Conference last month heard a mixture of good news and bad news. In previous conferences, data on protease inhibitors and combination drug therapy led many to believe the virus could be eradicated from the body. These hopes were dashed by the discovery that the virus hides in many cells. However, the virus still appears to be susceptible to antiviral drugs. Drugs that flush the virus out of cells could still be useful. Strengthening the immune system could allow patients to keep the virus in check even if it was not completely eradicated from their body.
