Asking women why: a study in Tanzania

Article Abstract:

Pregnancies in Tanzania can be fraught with peril. Many rural residents of the country will seek local health services, which can range from western-style services to spirit mediums and native healers. Distances from health care facilities, poverty, and the low status of poorer women contribute to the risks faced by a pregnant Tanzanian.

Challenge in Tanzania

Article Abstract:

Tanzania's government program focused on getting drugs needed to cure TB to patients in rural areas, since drug-resistant strains develop if patients do not take treatment for six months. The challenges facing the program are discussed.

A Himalayan challenge

Bhutan established its own Essential Drugs Program in 1986, with the support of the World Health Organization. The program has made essential drugs available at all health facilities, achieving a drug quality rate of 95%.
