Assessment of lupus: where are we now?

Article Abstract:

The treatment of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may depend on a number of different factors. SLE is an inflammatory disorder characterized by fever, weakness, joint pain or arthritis and skin lesions. Treatment may depend on the rate of change of different laboratory markers and clinical measures of disease activity. Different tests can be done to determine the level of disease activity. The most useful test may be measuring erythrocyte sedimentation rate. More specific tests include measuring blood levels of antibodies against double stranded DNA and of complement. Clinical measures of disease activity provide a more qualitative assessment of disease activity. The Systemic Lupus Activity Measure is an activity scale that can be used to assess the level of disease activity and severity. Four other activity scales can also be used.
