Association of funding and conclusions in randomized drug trials: a reflection of treatment effect or adverse events?

Article Abstract:

Doctors should be cautious when interpreting the conclusions of studies that are funded by the pharmaceutical industry, according to researchers who analyzed 25 reviews covering 370 drug studies. The drug under study was recommended as the drug of choice in 51% of the studies funded by for-profit companies, 35% of the studies funded by non-profit and for-profit organizations, and 16% of the studies funded solely by non-profit organizations. This indicates a bias in favor of the drug that may not reflect its actual effectiveness.
