Association between cardiovascular outcomes and antihypertensive drug treatment in older women

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to prospectively evaluate whether there are differences in cardiovascular mortality among postmenopausal women with hypertension and no history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) treated with different classes of antihypertensive agents, either singly or in combination. It is concluded that among women with hypertension and no history of CVD, a 2-durg-class regimen of calcium channel blockers plus diuretics is associated with a high risk of CVD morality against beta-blockers plus diuretics.

Effect of estrogen plus progestin on stroke in postmenopausal women: a randomized trial

Article Abstract:

Hormone replacement therapy may increase a postmenopausal woman's risk of stroke, according to a study of 16,608 women participating in the Women's Health Initiative. This study was actually stopped prematurely because it showed that hormone replacement therapy may do more harm than good. It also increases a woman's risk of breast cancer, heart attack, and abnormal blood clot formation.

Health risks and benefits 3 years after stopping randomized treatment with estrogen and progestin

Article Abstract:

A study to determine the health risks and benefits that women were exposed to following stoppage of estrogen and progestin hormone therapy is conducted. Results reveal that women administered conjugated equine estrogens (CEE) were at higher risk of manifesting cardiovascular problems as well as fatal and nonfatal malignancies compared to those who did not receive the hormone therapy.
