Asthma in older people

Article Abstract:

Asthma in the elderly is not always diagnosed or treated appropriately. The condition when suffered by the elderly can be worse than in younger people. Symptoms of asthma sufferers tend to include wheezing, coughing, and breathing difficulties, the latter particularly in the elderly. It is not easy to distinguish between emphysema, bronchitis and asthma, especially among smokers, and there can be other problems as well as asthma. If the condition is not diagnosed, sufferers may not be living as good a lifestyle as possible.

Waiting to exhale

Article Abstract:

Teaching patients to cope with breathlessness can be achieved by helping them to overcome fears and anxieties connected with the physical and psychological aspects of the problem. Breathlessness may be a physical complication associated with heart or lung illness or it may be associated with a psychological problem, such as death or anxiety. Nurses can help sufferers to come to terms with their breathlessness by learning to use strategic breathing techniques.
