Attibutable risk in practice

Article Abstract:

To estimate the proportions of disease cases associated with various risk factors when several risk factors are involved, it is not trivial to decide how or if adjustments should be made for some factors while attibutable risks for some other factors are also considered. Although disparity in interventional gains has been indicated by case-control studies of two diseases, actual interventions are implied, and they must be considered. The associated costs must also be taken into account.

Attributable fraction for cardiac malformations

Article Abstract:

Congenital abnormalities of the heart and large vessels are a major reason for infant mortality and for morbidity in early and later life. Attributable fractions of factors that are potentially causal have been determined for eight malformations. If the factors are causal, larger extra attributable fractions suggest possible prevention by certain actions taken before or during pregnancy.
