Article Abstract:

A 1992 National Audit Office report recognises the value of the emergency nurse practitioner (ENP) for the efficient operation of hospital accident and emergency departments. ENPs may diagnose, treat and discharge or refer patients with minor problems. Effective employment of ENPs raises care standards, relieves the doctor's workload and reduces patient waiting time. However, a recognised national training structure is necessary to prevent abuse of the system.

Non-fiction addiction

Article Abstract:

The acceptance of a nurse's article for journal publication resulted in an addiction to writing. A training course and nursing practice stimulated further contributions. An invitation to assess other contributed articles followed. Joining a panel of regular columnists was a further progression. The addiction has culminated in appointment as assistant clinical editor for the Nursing Times.
