BRCA1 testing - advances and retreats

Article Abstract:

It probably is not cost-effective to screen all American women for the BRCA1 gene mutation. This mutation has been linked to an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer. When this gene was identified in 1994, researchers believed that half of all families at risk for breast cancer might have a BRCA1 mutation. However, two 1998 studies found that only 6% to 7% of women with early-onset breast cancer or a family history of the disease had a BRCA1 mutation. Family history seems to be the strongest risk for the mutation, especially if many family members have been affected by cancer.

Survival associated with treatment vs observation of localized prostate cancer in elderly men

Article Abstract:

A study evaluated the association of active treatment by radiation or prostatectomy vs observation with overall survival in a population-based sample of elderly men treated for low- or intermediate-risk localized prostate cancer. Results suggested a reduced risk of mortality associated with active treatment for low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer in the elderly population examined.

Genetic Susceptibility to Breast Cancer: From the Roll of the Dice to the Hand Women Were Dealt

Article Abstract:

More research on larger groups of women is needed to determine the genetic aspects of breast cancer. Many gene mutations have been linked to breast cancer, but not all women with the mutation will get breast cancer.
