Badge of courage

Article Abstract:

Nurse Edith Cavell's patriotism and sense of duty as a committed Christian resulted in her death at the hands of a German firing squad on Oct. 12, 1915. Cavell, the daughter of a Norfolk, England, vicar, began her career as a governess but decided to become a nurse after nursing her seriously ill father to a good recovery in 1895. She was appointed matron of the Berkendael Medical Institute when it opened in Brussels, Belgium, in 1907. Cavell took enormous risks in nursing Allied soldiers during the first world war and helping them to escape, and was finally arrested by the Germans.

Keeping watch

Article Abstract:

Modern date nursing techniques regarding nurses and patients relationships were originally formed by nursing pioneer Hildegard Peplau, who died on 18 March 1999. Peplau was born in 1909 in the USA. From an early age she enjoyed watching people and their interaction with each other. She further developed this when she studied medicine at university, forming a theory relating to the relationship between nurses and patients.
