Do not underestimate the school nurse

Article Abstract:

The role of the school nurse is misunderstood because people think it only involves immunizations and checking for nits. However, school nurses are well trained and care deeply about the health of children. They care for 3,000 children in up to 10 schools. They can talk to children about sexual matters and help with special needs children or adolescents who are having problems. School nurses want respect and parity of pay with health visitors. Instead, they have to cope with threats of job cuts. School nurses must raise their profile if they want to defend their specialism.

Keeping children healthy: Role of the school nurse

Article Abstract:

The Department of Health commissioned a two year study to determine the role of nurses in keeping schoolchildren healthy, with particular focus on school nurses. Both parents and pupils felt that the main responsibility for health lay with the family, although parents expected staff to be involved in safeguarding their childrens' health. School nurses felt that the current focus on health promotion was important and that it was an opportunity to encourage health lifestyles.
