Behind the smokescreen

Article Abstract:

The UK government is planning to prevent tobacco companies from advertising and sponsoring sporting events, however, the UK is still less strict than many other European countries. New Zealand has also taken a firm stand against tobacco advertising by prohibiting it in magazines and newspapers. The New Zealand government now uses the taxes raised from cigarette sales to fund sporting events which used to rely on tobacco sponsorship, and this strategy could be applied in the UK also. Smoking rates for people aged 20-24 years in New Zealand have fallen from 38% in 1990 to 30% in 1996.

A welcome in the hillsides

Article Abstract:

Chief nurse for Wales, Rosemary Kennedy, feels a real affinity with Wales even though she was not born there. Ms Kennedy had worked as a nurse in Wales for 14 years before taking up a post at Addenbrooke's hospital as the director of nursing. Her new role as chief nurse will involve advising ministers and also being the director of nursing for all of Wales. There are 15 trusts where there used to be 23 so she is expecting to hear some grievances from people who have lost their jobs or who have been downgraded.
