The approach to diagnosis of pulmonary embolism

Article Abstract:

The third most commonly occurring cardiovascular illness in the US is pulmonary embolism (PE) and patients with the risk factors of dyspnea or unexplained pleuritic chest pain must have a ventilation-perfusion scan. Patients with nondiagnostic scans should receive further workups. Pulmonary angiography is necessary when the location of deep vein thrombosis cannot be identified. PE can be the hardest to diagnose of the key life-threatening causes of chest pain.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia: diagnosis and watchful waiting as management

Article Abstract:

Physicians may best serve patients with moderate symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia by waiting, watching, and re-evaluating symptoms periodically. This non-malignant enlargement of the prostate affects some 50 million men and generally the symptoms do not progress or invite complications. This approach should not be used for patients with severe symptoms. In these cases, and in cases where moderate symptoms progress, urological evaluation should be done.

A proactive approach is presented for clinicians dealing with gay and lesbian adolescents, to reduce the risks of depression and suicide. Open discussion of sexuality issues is paramount, and clinicians must convey to the youths and their parents that homosexuality is not an illness. Identity development, support groups, specific medical issues, suicide risk factors, counseling, resources and referrals are covered.
