Beta-2 microglobulin measurements in saliva of patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome: influence of flow

Article Abstract:

Testing for elevated beta-2 microglobulin secretion may be useful in the diagnosis of Sjogren's syndrome. Sjogren's syndrome is a chronic inflammatory disorder that affects the salivary glands and the tear ducts. Beta-2 microglobulin is a protein found on the surface of immune system cells. A study examined levels of beta-2 microglobulin in saliva samples from 29 patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome and 30 healthy individuals (control group). Secretion of beta-2 microglobulin was approximately twice as high in the patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome as in the healthy individuals during stimulation of the taste buds. Saliva flow was the same during stimulation for patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome and the control group. Saliva flow was lower in the patients without stimulation.

Fatigue in primary Sjogren's syndrome

Article Abstract:

Patients with Sjogren's syndrome (SS) report significant fatigue, possibly related to autonomic nervous system function. Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease characterized by dry mouth and eyes, arthritis, and other symptoms. Researchers surveyed 49 women with SS, 44 women with rheumatoid arthritis, and 32 healthy women. Mental fatigue and reduced motivation were associated with symptoms of depression in SS patients. SS patients reported more physical fatigue unrelated to depression. Fatigue in SS patients seemed to be related to reduced noradrenaline levels in the blood.

Parasympathetic failure does not contribute to ocular dryness in primary Sjogren's syndrome

Article Abstract:

Although Sjogren's syndrome can affect the parasympathetic system, this does not cause eye dryness in most patients. Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease that affects the nervous system in about one-fourth of all patients. In a study of 41 patients, 15% had abnormal parasympathetic function.
