Billions of dollars could be diverted to health care; from tobacco, alcohol subsidies

Article Abstract:

Billions of dollars would be available to finance health care in the United States if subsidies for the tobacco and alcoholic beverage industries were dropped. Tax exemptions should be eliminated for advertising of cigarettes and alcohol, which destroy the health. Other positive steps to promote health include education to teach a life style that encourages wellness. Also, medical schools should strive to turn out family physicians who agree to serve in localities that suffer a shortage of health services.

Some anti-tobacco ads more effective in cutting smoking

Article Abstract:

A study has shown that ads depicting the tobacco industry as manipulative and deceitful are effective in persuading smokers to quit or reduce their usage. More than 34% of former smokers cited a tobacco-control ad figured significantly in their decision to quit smoking. The second-hand smoke issue is another influential strategy. Less persuasive ads targeted health effects.

Latest tobacco bill gets mild support, strong opposition

Article Abstract:

Tobacco industry legislation for the 1998 session introduced by John McCain, chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, has drawn criticism from the industry and health groups alike. The tobacco industry may challenge the bill's constitutionality, while the American Medical Association objects to the measure's $6.5 billion per year in legal liability protections.
