Birth control

Article Abstract:

There is a very long tradition in the UK of lay midwives helping women to give birth. These midwives passed down valuable experience from generation to generation. The first legislation to control midwifery came in 1512, when lay midwives had to swear in court that they did not use witchcraft. The medical subordination of midwifery began at around the same time. The first influential English textbook on midwivery written by a woman was by Jane Sharp in 1671. The first moves towards training midwives were the result of medical pressure and the introduction of lying-in wards and hospitals.

In our parents shadow: Cockayne syndrome

Article Abstract:

Children suffering from the rare inherited disease Cockayne syndrome (CS) may eventually need to be cared for in an institution for the chronically ill. The syndrome affects three groups of genes. The first indication of the disease occurs between the ages of one month and three years. Children with CS are very sensitive to light and they go on to develop mental retardation and dwarfism. Those with classic CS do not usually live longer than 20 years whilst children with early-onset CS often die earlier. Both sexes suffer from CS. Cases of CS are found in Japan, the US and Europe.

Ancient and modern: the best of both

Article Abstract:

Modern day wound care owes a great deal to the work carried out by ancient civilisations, who developed unsophisticated yet effective methods of dressing and wound treatment. The discovery of antibiotics is one of the main reasons wound care has developed into an important department within the medical world. Wound care management benefitted from techniques learnt during both the First and Second World Wars, which allowed medical staff to try products which may have taken years to develop.
